UPDATE ON CASES
DEFENSE AND PROSECUTION FILE APPEALS
On 3 October 2012, the legal representatives for former Congolese rebel Thomas Lubanga submitted two appeals challenging the guilty verdict and sentencing decision handed down by ICC judges, in the Court’s first trial earlier this year. The defense team has asked for an acquittal and annulment of Lubanga’s 14-year sentence or alternatively a reduction of Lubanga’s sentence. Meanwhile, ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda has appealed the Court’s sentence for Lubanga, requesting that it be revised upward.
