The International Criminal Court (ICC) has reported that on 2nd January 2015, a Kenyan key witness (Mr Meshack Yabei) was found dead. Mr Yabei was the witness for the defence in the trial of William Ruto, Deputy President of Kenya. Yabei was reported missing on 28th December last year. Six days later, his body was found floating in a river. BBC Africa.com news has reported that according to a police investigator, fingerprints taken from the body do not match those of Yabei. Investigations are still underway.
The gruesome incident has raised concerns on the protection of witnesses. The ICC has faced challenges of witnesses withdrawing and /or recanting their testimonies.
