Benin Ratifies the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Establishment of an African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights

The Republic of Benin has ratified the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Establishment of an African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (1998), hereinafter the Protocol. Article 1 of the Protocol is the legal basis for the establishment of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights. The ratification of the Protocol gives the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights jurisdiction over cases and disputes on the interpretation and application of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the Protocol and any other relevant human rights instrument ratified by Benin.

Benin’s Instrument of Ratification of the Protocol was submitted to the African Union in a note dated 22nd August 2014. This ratification makes Benin the 28th State to ratify the Protocol.
